Davidson’s Nik Cochran scored his 1,000th career point in a 87-52 win against Appalachian State on Feb. 9.

The 6-foot-3 senior guard became the 44th Wildcat to hit the landmark by hitting a 3-pointer with 6:20 left in the first half of that game. He’s the fourth current Davidson player to hit 1,000 points.

Cochran has led the nation in free-throw shooting for most of the season. Heading into the Feb. 14 game against College of Charleston, he had made 87 of 92 attempts (.946) for the season.

The Vancouver, Canada, native had a streak of 29 consecutive made free-throws earlier in the season.

Cochran is third for the Wildcats in scoring, with nearly 10 points per game. He leads the team from long-distance, making 45 percent of his 3-point attempts.

Lincoln Charter’s Lappin among 1A/2A swim champs

Lincoln Charter’s Christina Lappin won two events, the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard butterfly, at the 1A/2A swim meet to lead area swimmers.

Lincoln Charter finished third among the girls followed by Lake Norman Charter at fourth. South Iredell was sixth while Pine Lake Prep, led by Alyssa Marsh’s 100-yard backstroke championship, was ninth.

Lake Norman Charter, which finished third among the boys, claimed a state title in the 200-yard medley relay (Chris Cardwell, Drew Queen, Corrin Rothwell and Austin Jones). The 200-medley relay broke last year’s Knight state record with a 1:38.52.

Lake Norman Charter divers Adyson Lowe and Nathan Lane defended their state championships. Teammate Erin Lee was third in the girls’ event. Lane set a new 1A/2A state record with a score of 380.15.

Knight boys finish second

North Lincoln’s boys were 1A/2A/3A indoor track state runners-up. The Knights were led by Andrew Fea and Joshua Mosteller, who finished first and second, respectively, in the 1,600 meters.

Eagle swimmers win conference

SouthLake Christian swept the Metrolina Athletic Conference’s swimming championships.

The Eagles’ girls, led by Olivia Rasbornick (200 free), Taylor Harkey (100 free) and Moriah Anderson (100 breast), scored 304 points to clinch first place.

SouthLake’s boys outlasted Hickory Grove 267-245 to win the conference. John Baker led the way for the Eagles, winning the 100 backstroke and the 500 freestyle.

Husky named to East-West team

Hough senior James Jackson was named to the N.C. Coaches Association East-West All-Star game.

Jackson, a forward, was an all-state player last season after scoring 14 goals for the Huskies.

The game, part of the 2013 East-West All-Star Games that will also feature girls’ soccer, boys’ and girls’ basketball and football, is set for July 23 at UNC Greensboro.

Jackson is the third Hough boys’ soccer player to be chosen for the event. Nathaniel Goodwin and Jaron Bradley played in last year’s game.
