Bud’s Black Crown isn’t bad, but won’t please the craft crowd

Black Crown, Budweiser, St. Louis

About $7 for six 12 oz. bottles.

If you’re a regular consumer of Budweiser beers, you’ll notice a definite difference in the brewing giant’s new amber lager, Black Crown. It’s a sweeter and fuller beer, thanks to a solid caramel malt backbone. There’s not much in the way of hops here, but there’s a hint of pleasant woodiness, along with that familiar Bud tang. For fussier beer drinkers, it’s one you should reach for when only macrobrews are available, but it’s probably not one you’ll reach for on the grocer’s shelf. Peter St. Onge
