Shelby-area man sentenced in 2007 hit-run

SHELBY -- A Cleveland County man will spend 2 1/2 months in jail after pleading guilty in the 2007 fatal hit-and-run incident involving a man walking home after his first day at a new job.

Shannon Lynn White, 35, entered a guilty plea Thursday in Cleveland County Superior Court to charges of misdemeanor hit and run and felony hit-and run.

Prosecutors say he was behind the wheel of a car that struck and killed Jonathan Scruggs, 18, on May 22, 2007. Scruggs, who had just finished his first day on the job at a restaurant, was walking home that evening on Caleb Road when he was struck.

According to authorities, White contacted police the next day, saying he initially thought he had struck an animal.

White was sentenced to 75 days in jail, three years’ probation, and was ordered to pay restitution to Scruggs’ family for the funeral costs.
