Junior guard DeMario Mayfield, who had been suspended from the Charlotte 49ers’ men’s basketball team since Jan. 30 for violating athletics department policy, has been dismissed from the team, athletics director Judy Rose and coach Alan Major announced Friday.
Mayfield was the 49ers’ leading scorer at the time of his suspension, averaging 11.7 points and 3.6 rebounds.
Mayfield was Major’s first recruit, transferring to Charlotte from Georgia in 2010.
Mayfield already had been suspended for the first two games of this season for breaking team rules.
Mayfield also was suspended for one game last season after being arrested for misdemeanor marijuana possession, a charge that was later dropped.
“The coaching staff wants to wish DeMario the best in his future endeavors,” Major said in a statement. “We will continue to move forward as a team.”
The 49ers (18-7, 6-5 Atlantic 10) play again at 4 p.m. Sunday against Temple (18-6, 7-5) at Halton Arena.
