Sept. 9, Myers Park 20, Gastonia Huss 0 (at Huss)

Jimmie Lee Kirkpatrick scores two-first quarter touchdowns (5 and 23 yards) and also has a 71-yard punt return for a touchdown called back because of a penalty.

Sept. 17, Myers Park 13, Garinger 7 (at Memorial Stadium)

Trailing 7-6 and down to a final fourth-and-8 play from the Garinger 28 with 12 seconds left, the Mustangs win on a 28-yard pass play from backup quarterback Randy Short to Kirkpatrick in front of 10,162 fans. Kirkpatrick also scored on an 8-yard run. Linebacker Mack Tharpe led the defense and was named Charlotte News player of the week

Sept. 24, Myers Park 14, North Mecklenburg 13 (at Myers Park)

Down 6-0, the Mustangs come back to win on a 36-yard touchdown run by Kirkpatrick and a 1-yard quarterback sneak by Hayden.

Oct. 1, Myers Park 41, South Mecklenburg 13 (at Memorial Stadium)

Hayden completes 11 of 18 passes for 207 yards and two touchdowns to Bill Farthing (24 and 18 yards) and runs for touchdowns of 10 and 44 yards.

Oct. 15, Myers Park 27, Gastonia Ashley 6 (at Myers Park)

Hayden throws two touchdown passes, Kirkpatrick scores on a 73-yard punt return after carrying the ball only twice in the first half and Tharpe scores on 4-yard run.

Oct. 22, Myers Park 47, Harding 21 (at Memorial Stadium)

Kirkpatrick touches the ball twice in the second half and scores touchdowns both times -- a 56-yard run and a 91-yard kickoff return. He also scores on a 25-yard run. Hayden throws two touchdown passes and Tharpe scores on a 38-yard interception.

Oct. 29, Myers Park 34, East Mecklenburg 0 (at Memorial Stadium)

Kirkpatrick scores on a 92-yard pass from Hayden and a 71-yard run. Hayden has two touchdown passes (91 and 33 yards) and a 2-yard run and Tharpe scores a 2-yard touchdown.

Nov. 5, Myers Park 27, Rocky Mount 7 (at Myers Park)

Kirkpatrick scores three touchdowns -- runs of 34 and 4 yards and a pass reception for 23 yards. Harris Woodside catches four passes for 65 yards.

Nov. 12, Myers Park 34, West Mecklenburg 0 (at Myers Park)

Hayden completes 15 of 21 passes for 201 yards and two touchdowns (25, 17 yards) and runs for a third (2 yards). Kirkpatrick scores a 1-yard touchdown run, but hurts his knee in the second quarter and doesn’t return.

Nov. 20, Myers Park 46, Asheville Lee Edwards 21 (at Edwards)

With the Mustangs trailing 21-20 in a regional semifinal game, coach Gus Purcell tells his team at halftime that he once said this was the best team Myers Park has ever had, but after seeing the first 24 minutes he doubted it. Kirkpatrick scores three touchdowns (pass receptions of 64 and 33 yards and a 12-yard run). On one touchdown, his fake causes two pursuing defenders to run into each other. After the game, Purcell says he retracted his halftime statement and also says, “Kirkpatrick is the greatest I have ever seen.”

Nov. 26, Myers Park 27, Garinger 6 (at Memorial Stadium)

In the Western Regional 4A championship game, Tharpe gains 55 yards in five carries, has 10 tackles and blocks an extra point to lead the defense along with Nick Karres and Woodside. Kirkpatrick has a 15-yard touchdown run, his 19th of the season.
