Maiden golf course clubhouse destroyed in Sunday morning blaze

The Glen Oaks Golf Course clubhouse in Maiden was destroyed Sunday morning during an early morning blaze.

The two-alarm fire was called in around 5:30 a.m. By the time firefighters from the Maiden and Lincoln County North 321 department arrived, 75 percent of the structure was engulfed.

It took 35 firefighters more than an hour to bring the fire under control.

The Catawba County fire marshal and SBI are investigating, although officials believe it was accidental.

“Some neighbors said they heard an explosion about 30 minutes prior to the call. They’re investigating that to see the relationship with the fire,” Maiden Fire Chief Danny Hipps said. “Possible gas leak maybe.”

Staff photographer Jeff Wilhelm contributed.
