Originally from England, Sarah Ryberg has lived in Charlotte for the last 12 years and is a graduate of UNC Charlotte. After two whirlwind weddings - one in Charlotte and another in her homeland - Sarah is settling into married life and learning what it takes to be a Mrs. You can reach Sarah at sarahmryberg@yahoo.com

In a little over a week, Robert and I will be celebrating our two year anniversary. If you’ve been following along since last year, you’ll know that we’re trying to be traditional when it comes to gifts. This year it’s cotton, which is a little easier than last year’s paper gifts.

You have to wonder how themed anniversary gifts came about in the first place. I was curious, so I researched it online. According to Wikipedia, the tradition started during the Roman Empire. Husbands gave silver wreaths to their wives on their 25th anniversary and gold ones on their 50th. As commercialism grew, more traditional gifts were added to the list.

Looking ahead, the traditional gift ideas get more challenging and, frankly, a little stranger. For example, one year the tradition is iron. Luckily, cotton is one of the easier ones and here are just some gift ideas to get you started:

- A cotton tee

Stores like Target and Kohls have a fun selection of affordable tees, particularly for men. Just look at the adorable tee from Target above.

- Cotton bed sets

As a combined gift to one another, you could always splurge on some Egyptian cotton sheets. New sheets may inspire other ideas for your anniversary as well. If you’re on a budget, funny pillowcases are equally as perfect.

- New robes

Monogrammed robes are not only ideal for lazy Sundays, but could be used as a double gift for your anniversary. You and your spouse could indulge in an at-home spa day, with massages and long, hot baths to boot.

- Cotton candy

I know my husband has a sweet tooth and something like cotton candy would make his day. However, cotton candy opens the day to other gift ideas as well. If the State Fair is occurring during your anniversary, or a local theme park is open, you can use the purpose of getting cotton candy as the excuse for a fun-filled day!

- Cotton jewelry or cufflinks

On Etsy, you can find cotton necklaces and cufflinks for your spouse (as pictured above). You can even personalize the necklaces with your spouse’s initials.

- Cotton flowers

When looking for second anniversary gift ideas, I stumbled across the gorgeous cotton bouquet shown above. If you’re looking for something unique, these flowers will definitely be a hit.
