Lincoln industrial plant victim ID’d

LINCOLNTON -- Authorities in Lincoln County have released the name of a man who was killed in an industrial accident Saturday and said the victim had worked at the plant under an assumed name for years.

The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office says the victim was Marendonio Francisco Viruel Lopez, 35, of Lincolnton.

Lopez died while working at the RSI Home Products plant on Lincoln County Parkway in Lincolnton. Investigators say he somehow became caught in an angular saw he was operating.

He was rushed to CMC-Lincoln shortly before 8:30 a.m. but died of his injuries, deputies say. Investigators say he had been working for RSI Home Products’ cabinet-making plant in Lincolnton for eight years under an assumed name.

RSI Home Products, which had no immediate comment on the death, employs about 5,000 people at plants in four states, plus Mexico and China.

The sheriff’s office says the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is investigating the death and what led up to it.
