Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have charged a 28-year-old man with the fatal shooting of a 57-year-old man early Monday outside a home in west Charlotte.
Police arrested and charged Reuben Timothy Curry with murder in connection with the death of Ronny Eugene Steele.
Steele died of a gunshot wound early Monday at a residence in the 2800 block of Wedgefield Drive, off of Old Steele Creek Road, in the Wingate neighborhood east of Charlotte Douglas International Airport.
Police found Curry early Monday at Carolinas Medical Center, being treated for a gunshot wound sustained during the incident. The injury was not life-threatening.
Police say they were called to Wedgewood Drive at about 1 a.m. Monday after a report that someone was shot. They found Steele in the driveway of a home, suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
Steele was rushed by ambulance to Carolinas Medical Center, where he died of his wound.
A next-door neighbor, who declined to identify herself, said she heard 15 to 20 shots coming from the home on Wedgefield Drive around 12:30 a.m. Monday.
I didnt hear a word before that, the woman said.
The neighbor said that a woman and her son who she estimated was about 10 years old moved into the house less than a year ago.
She said she has never seen a man matching the victims description at the house.
Detectives from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Departments homicide division and other units scoured the property during the night, looking for clues.
Police said a handgun was found near the shooting scene, and added that several shots apparently were fired.
A North Carolina criminal records search shows that Steele had a criminal history dating back to at least 1978, including convictions for second-degree kidnapping and possession of cocaine.
Anyone with information in the case is asked to call detectives at 704-432-TIPS, or Crime Stoppers, 704-334-1600.
On Monday afternoon, a gray Lexus ES 300 sat in the driveway of the brick home with red shutters. The back window had been shattered.
The next-door neighbor said that in the 45 years shes lived in the Wingate neighborhood, shes never heard of anything like Mondays shooting.
But another neighbor said that shes felt increasingly unsafe in the community, especially as long-term older residents have gradually been replaced with younger renters.
I dont fool with anybody over here, she said. I stay to myself. Im a Christian and I dont do the things that some of these people around here do.
