2 Hickory firefighters injured at blaze

HICKORY -- Two firefighters suffered minor injuries Monday evening in a two-alarm blaze that Hickory investigators say was a case of arson.

Authorities say firefighters were on their way back to the station about 10:15 p.m. from a medical call when they smelled smoke. The crew found the blaze, at a building in the 600 block of South Center Street.

Two engines and a ladder truck were sent to the scene initially, but a second alarm was sounded a short time later for additional equipment.

Officials say the two injured crew members were treated at the scene. Damage to the building was described as “moderate.”

Investigators said Tuesday morning that the fire was intentionally set, and they ask anyone with information to call the Hickory Fire Prevention Bureau, 828-323-7522, or the Hickory police, 828-328-5551.
