Student duo wins $2,000
Johnson & Wales seniors Damon Dickerson and Mike Bobb are the winning team from the S&D Culinary Challenge 2013 Extracts Edition. The pair took top prize of $2,000 for their dish of seared red snapper with fennel and black tea shitake broth.
The third annual live cooking competition was held Feb. 19 at Hance Auditorium on the Johnson & Wales campus between students who created recipes that incorporated S&D coffee or tea extracts.
For the entrée category, the first runner-up was Joy Turner with “Scotch and coffee,” and second runner-up was Joseph Siccardi and Dustin Wigglesworth with “Barbecue pork belly with sweet potato pasta and rainbow chard.” For desserts, first runner-up was Margo Ackman with “‘Cup of tea’ cake,” and second runner-up was Nikki Daniel with “Caramel mocha kiss cupcakes.” The Facebook Fan Favorite was Chelsea Gough and Marti Kelley for “Frozen coffee explosion,” and the best demo presentation winner was Margo Ackman.
Recipe finalist
Janice Elder of Charlotte is one of five “People’s Choice” semi-finalists in the seventh annual Man-O-Manischewitz Cook Off. Online voting is open through Thursday, and the person with the most votes will go to the live competition March 21 in Newark, N.J. Sweet Tooth Festival
This second annual event will be 7-9:30 p.m. March 9 at BlackLion, 10605 Park Road. The event will feature more than 25 of the area’s bakeries, chocolatiers and vendors of ice cream and other sweets. New this year will be cooking demonstrations, photo booth, red carpet and private shopping-tasting experience throughout the store.
Tickets are $30 – available online and at BlackLion – and will include samples and “goodie bags” from event sponsors. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Regional AIDS Interfaith Network.
