College Baseball Roundup: South Carolina freshman shuts down Furman

COLUMBIA Jack Wynkoop pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings in his first start and seventh-ranked South Carolina scored three during the fifth inning to beat Furman 5-2 Tuesday in nonconference baseball action.

Wynkoop (1-0), a freshman left-hander, scattered five hits and struck out two for the Gamecocks (6-1).  2/3 perfect innings with three strikeouts. Left-hander Tyler Webb pitched one scoreless inning to pick up his third save. Reliever Elliott Warford (0-1) allowed three runs on three hits in 21/3 innings to take the loss for the Paladins (5-2).

Erik Payne drove in the Gamecocks’ first run with a bases-loaded fielder’s choice. Payne’s grounder was fielded cleanly by third baseman Chris Ohmstede, but an errant throw to first added a second run. Grayson Greiner’s single made it 3-0.

Graham Saiko added a sixth-inning sacrifice fly and TJ Costen a two-out, RBI triple during the seventh.

Furman scored in the ninth on pinch-hitter Griffin Davis’ RBI single and a fielder’s choice.

Elsewhere

Charlotte: The 49ers’ game at Wake Forest was postponed until 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Clemson: The Tigers’ home game against Winthrop was rescheduled for 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Davidson: The Wildcats had their game against USC Upstate postponed because of rains. A rescheduled date has not been determined.

East Carolina: Inclement weather forced the Pirates to postpone their game against Virginia Commonwealth. The teams will attempt to make up the game.

Elon: Rains forced the Phoenix to postpone its game against Liberty. No make-up date was announced.

Limestone: The Saints had their game against Francis Marion washed out. No rescheduled date has been set.

N.C. Central: The Eagles’ opener of a two-game series against Delaware State was canceled. The teams will play one game at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Durham Athletic Park.

N.C. State: The Wolfpack’s series opener against New Mexico State was pushed back to 3 p.m. Wednesday. The teams also will play at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Wingate: The Bulldogs’ home game against Belmont Abbey was postponed. No make-up date has been announced.
