Harrisburg Mayor Tim Hagler excused himself from the crowd, stepped away from the podium and let out a loud, enthusiastic "woo" before speaking about the new emergency department that's expected to open in 2014 in Harrisburg. The groundbreaking ceremony for CMC-Harrisburg was Feb. 27 off Interstate 485 on Rocky River Road.

Carolinas HealthCare System will break ground Wednesday on a free-standing ER in Harrisburg.

The $20.2 million, 23,689-square foot emergency department is being build in the 9500 block of Rocky River Road. Construction is expected to be finished in early 2014.

Hospital officials said the new ER will be open 24-7 and have six treatment rooms, a CT scanner, full service lab and a helipad to transport patients, among other features.

Carolinas HealthCare said the ER is being modeled after four other “healthcare pavilions” the system has built in recent years in Steele Creek, Waxhaw, Kannapolis and Huntersville. Another free-standing ER is expected to open in the Morrocroft area next year.
