Monroe police say a high school senior has died from injuries she sustained in a wreck Tuesday evening.
The wreck occurred on US 601 North near the intersection of Deese Road.
Police said 17-year-old Mackenzie Rae Whiteley of Marshville was driving on the highway when she crossed the center line and struck a Ford pick-up truck head on, according to a news release.
Whiteley and the truck’s driver, Roosevelt Dewayne Nives, Jr., 30, of Chesterfield, SC, were taken to the hospital. Nives was treated and released Tuesday.
But police said Whiteley succumbed to her injuries early Wednesday morning.
The Piedmont High School senior had enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and was scheduled to begin basic training in August, police said.
“This is so sad and our hearts go out to her family and friends,” Monroe police Chief Debra Duncan said in a statement.
Police said they are continuing to investigate the wreck.
