A once-promising season might be slipping away from the Charlotte 49ers.

Dayton, winless on the road through seven Atlantic 10 games, blew away the 49ers in the second half on its way to an 88-67 victory Wednesday at Halton Arena.

The loss was Charlotte’s fifth in six games.

It has been a forgettable February for the 49ers (18-9, 6-7), who opened their conference season 3-0 and beat nationally ranked Butler just two weeks ago.

Now Charlotte might be in danger of missing the 12-team conference tournament. The 49ers are one game ahead of 13th-place Dayton.

Since that surprise in Indianapolis, the 49ers have lost by 18 points at Saint Louis, 20 to Temple and finally 21 to Dayton (15-12, 5-8).

Dayton picked apart Charlotte’s once-proud defense, shooting 61.7 percent.

After trailing 34-29 at halftime, Dayton made 11 of its first 12 shots of the second period and never really slowed down.

The Flyers had five players score in double figures, led by Devin Oliver’s 16. Charlotte freshman forward Darion Clark scored 17 points and had eight rebounds.
