College Baseball Roundup: Wake Forest overcomes Charlotte’s 7 doubles

WINSTON-SALEM The Charlotte 49ers piled up a season-high seven doubles, including two each from Brad Elwood and Justin Seager, but Wake Forest took advantage of nine walks for an 8-4 nonconference victory Wednesday night.

Luke Czajkowski and Brett Armour had home runs for the Deacons. With the score 1-1 in the fourth, Wake Forest (7-3) scored five times to snap a four-game winning streak by the 49ers (4-2).

No. 10 N.C. State 9, New Mexico State 2: Brett Williams went 2-for-3 with three RBIs for the host Wolfpack (6-1), but he took a sure eighth-inning double to left-center away from the Aggies (3-5) by laying out on a full sprint, snagging the fly and tumbling forward.

No. 1 North Carolina 18, St. John’s 5: Cody Stubbs and Tom Zengel each drove in three runs and the host Tar Heels (7-0) romped against the Red Storm (1-7).

Campbell 9, Duke 3: Elijah Trail homered and drove in three and Logan Self pitched four shutout innings to help Camels (7-1) win at Duke (4-3).

Liberty 14, East Carolina 4: Ryan Cordell and Trey Wimmer each belted a grand slam to propel the Flames (5-2) to the rout at East Carolina (3-4).

Appalachian State 6, High Point 4: Alex Leach had an RBI fielder’s choice in the third, a run-scoring triple in the seventh and a winning two-run double in the eighth for the host Mountaineers.
