They woke to snow falling in the North Carolina Mountains on Oct. 1, 2011. Joanna Nethery and Tyler McCall had been dating since February and were on a weekend getaway. Though the outdoorsy pair had planned to hike, the weather kept them inside reading and cozying up.

Tyler pulled out an album he had made of their adventures over the past months and said, “Look through these slowly.” Joanna started sifting through images that followed the moment they had met at their office in Charlotte. As she neared the end of the album, she was suddenly staring at the photo of a ring box as Tyler sank to his knee. “Looking back on it,” Joanna says of their engagement, “it didn’t feel fast, it just felt natural.”

Months later, their wedding was infused with the same natural feel at a mountaintop resort overlooking Grandfather Mountain. Joanna’s aunt, a metal smith and artist, added touches to the scenery as a wedding gift. “Put together some images of your dream wedding and I will try to recreate it,” she had told Joanna. The final accents emphasized wildflowers and shades of greens and whites—“All those colors that remind you of mountains in the summer,” Joanna says.

To celebrate Tyler’s Scottish background, Joanna surprised him with the lively playing of a bagpiper preceding her down the aisle, and the two said their vows in the open air just before sunset on August 11, 2012. The sunk sank just as their 150 guests accompanied them to the terrace for the reception, enjoying the breathtaking views of their surroundings. “The sun just fell in the exact place that it should have,” Joanna said, “and the clouds were lit up fuchsia and orange, and it was just perfect.”
