Burke man killed by falling tree

VALDESE -- A Burke County man who was working for a tree-clearing company died Wednesday evening of injuries he suffered earlier in the day when struck by a falling tree, authorities say.

The man, whose identity has not been released, was clearing trees shortly before 9 a.m. when he was hurt, according to emergency services officials. The incident happened when a crew from Asplundh Tree Company was working off Perkins Road, southeast of Valdese.

Emergency services crews had to get around a flooded creek in order to reach the injured man. He was taken to a Valdese hospital, where he died later in the day.

Asplundh Tree Company has not commented on the incident.
