Iredell County deputies say a man they arrested before daybreak Friday has been linked to a series of burglaries in and near Statesville.

Michael Todd Cromwell, 47, of Statesville, was taken into custody after being caught while trying to run away from deputies along Turnersburg Highway. Authorities say he will face a number of felony breaking-and-entering charges, along with larceny charges.

The investigation is continuing, deputies say.

According to authorities, the sheriff’s office received an alarm call about 4:20 a.m. from Davis Animal Hospital, on Turnersburg Highway. Deputies already were on stepped-up patrols in the area, due to a rash of burglaries recently in the area.

Deputies said they found the door of the animal hospital had been smashed in, and items had been stolen.

A short time later, deputies say, they spotted a man hiding behind a nearby Lowe’s store. The man, later identified as Cromwell, turned and ran when deputies approached. He was caught a short time later.

Authorities say they searched the area where Cromwell was spotted, and found a number of burglary tools, along with money and other items.

Investigators say Cromwell admitted to breaking into four businesses along Turnersburg Highway, along with 13 other cases in the Statesville area. Statesville police are working with the sheriff’s office in the case.
