S. Carolina shuts out Clemson

CLEMSON Sophomore left-hander Jordan Montgomery did not allow a batter to reach third base in eight scoreless innings of work and had nine strikeouts as South Carolina defeated Clemson 6-0 Friday evening at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

The Gamecocks (7-1) got RBIs from five different players, including the top four in the order, to down the Tigers (5-3).

Elsewhere

Charlotte 9, Youngstown State 3: Outfielder Justin Seager had four hits and three RBI as Charlotte’s (7-4) bats continued to be hot in its series-opening home win over the Penguins (2-7) at Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium.

Appalachian St. 4, Davidson 1: The Mountaineers (6-1) took advantage of the host Wildcats’ (4-3) miscues and made timely pitches to take the Southern Conference opener for both teams at Wilson Field.

North Carolina 2, Rice 1: The pitching duel between Tar Heels (8-0) starting pitcher Kent Emanuel and Owls (6-3) starter Austin Kubitza lived up to its billing, and the Tar Heels scored twice on wild pitches to take the opening game of the Astros Foundation College Classic in Houston. Chaz Frank scored the winning run in the ninth.

N.C. State 5, UMBC 3: The Wolfpack (8-1) fell behind 3-1, but clawed back against the Retrievers (0-1) at the Baseball at the Beach hosted by Coastal Carolina.

Brett Williams’ single brought home Trea Turner, who had tripled to lead off the seventh, to take a 4-3 lead. Williams later scored the insurance run on a wild pitch.

Towson 9, Duke 3: The Tigers (5-2) put up four runs in the sixth and never relinquished the lead, to down the Blue Devils (4-4) at the Durham Bull Athletic Park.

Wake Forest 6, New Mexico St. 1: Austin Stadler struck out six batters and surrendered three hits as the Deacons (8-3) continued their best start since 2006 with a win over the Aggies (3-7).
