Students win at Shakespeare event

Jacob Michael McHugh of Ardrey Kell High and Sarah Roberts of Alexander Graham Middle were first-place winners at Wingate University’s annual Shakespeare Competition on Feb. 19.

Almost 300 students competed. In the preliminary round, students recited a sonnet and a portion of a Shakespeare play before a faculty/staff judge and a student judge. Winners advanced to the final round.

Jacob won a free trip to New York City to compete in the National Shakespeare Competition. Wingate University tuition scholarships will be given to first- through third-place winners in the high school division. Anthony J. Simos of Brown High was second; Nkeki Obi-Melekwe of Central Academy of Technology & Arts was third.

Rachel Wainscott of J.M. Robinson was second in the middle school division. Alex Woodcook of Community House was third.
