Lt. Mike Baker, now retired from the York County Sheriff's Office, speaks with the media during a 2011 news conference at the Bethesda Fire Department.

YORK The York County Council on Monday approved giving retired Lt. Mike Baker his service weapon – a Glock 22 pistol – which he used for 18 years during his time at the York County Sheriff’s Office.

Baker retired in March 2012 after 25 years with the sheriff’s office. He was the sheriff’s first public information officer, spent five years as a narcotics detective and was the office’s first Crime Stoppers coordinator. He also was one of the county’s first fulltime K-9 officers.

“It was a great honor for me to serve York County at the sheriff’s office,” Baker said before the meeting.

Baker now is a writer, photographer and an active volunteer on arts councils.
