False alarm puts Alexander school on lockdown

TAYLORSVILLE -- A false report of a hostage situation forced an Alexander County elementary school into a lockdown Tuesday morning.

The sheriff’s office says someone called 911 about 7:30 a.m. and reported a person was being held hostage near Bethlehem Elementary School, in the 7900 block of N.C. 127 near Taylorsville.

Authorities immediately put the school on lockdown. Buses headed for the school were diverted to West Alexander Middle School.

The sheriff’s office says the call turned out to be a hoax, and the lockdown was lifted a short time later.
