The Panthers are bringing back their special teams captain.
Backup linebacker and special teams ace Jordan Senn said Wednesday night he has agreed to a 1-year deal with the Panthers. The team has not confirmed the deal because Senn has not yet signed the contract.
Senn, 28, an unrestricted free agent, said he was pleased to reach an agreement so quickly. The Panthers waited until April last offseason to re-sign Senn when he was eligible for free agency for the first time.
“I'm glad to be coming back and to get it done,” Senn said Wednesday from Portland, Ore., where he is spending the offseason. “Sitting around last year wasn't real fun, not knowing what way it was going to go.”
Senn, who came to Charlotte in 2009 after he was waived by Indianapolis, was second on the team last season with 15 special teams tackles. Jason Phillips, another free agent linebacker, was the team leader with 16.
Senn started a career-high seven games in 2011 when linebackers Jon Beason and Thomas Davis went down with season-ending injuries.
He signed a one-year contract worth $700,000 last spring. Terms of his new deal have not been disclosed.
Senn said he likes the direction the franchise is heading and was happy the Panthers kept special teams coordinator Richard Rodgers. Rodgers took over as interim special teams coordinator midway through last season after Brian Murphy was fired.
