After a smooth start, the morning commute is getting a bit more difficult Thursday for Charlotte-area motorists.
There are a few collisions in the region, including a crash on northbound Interstate 85 in eastern Gaston County that is causing traffic back-ups.
Congestion also has become a problem on about a half-dozen routes.

I-85 northbound, Gaston County ... Collision in the right lane, between Cox Road (Exit 21) and Lowell-McAdenville (Exit 23). Traffic snarled for about 3 miles.
I-77 southbound, Lake Norman area ... Congestion; traffic moving 15-25 mph from the lake down to I-485.
I-77 northbound, south Charlotte ... Congestion; traffic moving 20-25 mph from south of Carowinds Boulevard to Woodlawn Road.
I-485 inner loop, south Mecklenburg ... Congestion; traffic moving 15-25 mph from Providence Road to South Boulevard.
I-485 outer loop, north Mecklenburg ... Congestion on the approach to I-85; traffic moving 20-30 mph from University City Boulevard to I-85.
I-85 southbound, Cabarrus County ... Congestion; traffic moving 15-30 mph from N.C. 73 down to I-485.
Independence Boulevard inbound ... Congestion; traffic moving 10-20 mph from Village Lake Drive to Idlewild Road.
Margaret Wallace Road at Independence Boulevard ... Collision reported at 7:40 a.m.; moderate delays.
Steele Creek Road at Sledge Road, near South Tryon ... Collision reported at 7:30 a.m.; minor delays.
