The annual N.C. Golden Gloves boxing tournament will be held Friday and Saturday at Sugaw Creek Recreation Center in Charlotte.

Bouts will begin at 7 p.m. Friday, and 4 p.m. Saturday at the center, which is located at 943 West Sugar Creek Road.

Tickets will be $10 for fans 13 and older, $5 for fans younger than 13. The tournament is always colorful, a coming together of styles and disciplines. Boxers represent the military, several Charlotte boxing clubs and other N.C. cities and towns.

Charlotte boxers who have competed include former U.S. Olympic super-heavyweight and heavyweight contender Calvin Brock, former IBF bantamweight champion Kelvin Seabrooks and former featherweight contender Bernard Taylor.

Former professional champions who competed in Golden Gloves in other cities include Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, Marvelous Marvin Hagler, Evander Holyfield and Mike Tyson.

Winners from Charlotte will advance to the regional tournament in Knoxville, Tenn. Regional winners will advance to the national tournament in Salt Lake City. Tom Sorensen
