5 area high school wrestling standouts finish season with perfect records

Monroe Piedmont’s Parker Von Egidy finished his senior season in style.

He pinned 30 opponents for a perfect 59-0 mark and the N.C. High School Athletic Association’s 2A 182-pound title. He was also named the All-Region and All-Observer Wrestler of the Year.

The Missouri signee is a three-time state champion, claiming the 152-pound championship as a sophomore and the 170-pound title last year. Von Egidy placed sixth at 140 pounds as a freshman.

He was one of five Observer-area wrestlers to finish the year with unblemished records.

Lake Norman’s Cody Karns, a North Carolina signee who was a four-time state placer, won the 120-pound 4A title to finish the season 52-0.

Chase’s Josh Stephens was 52-0 during his senior campaign, winning the 145-pound 2A title, while Fort Mill’s Nick Leitten won the South Carolina 4A 145-pound championship to cap a 54-0 season.

SouthLake Christian’s Sam Bryant won his second state championship, the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association’s 162-pound title, to claim All-Mecklenburg Wrestler of the Year honors. The senior was 34-0.

All-Mecklenburg Coach of the Year goes to Hough’s Tripp Rogers, who led a third-year program to I-Meck 4A and 4A West regional titles.

The Huskies, who also won the Jim Hayes and county tournaments among others, were 25-3 this season and reached the third round of the 4A dual-team playoffs. Rogers coached a county-best seven state qualifiers as Hough finished fourth among 4A teams at the NCHSAA tournament.

North Rowan’s Tim Pittman is All-Region and All-Observer Coach of the Year.

Pittman led the Cavaliers to a 1A team title at the state tournament behind individual champions Marc Gonzalez (106 pounds), Damon Ellis (120) and William Robertson (285). North Rowan was also 1A dual-team runner-up.
