One person was killed and another was charged Sunday after a head-on collision in northern Charlotte.
Police said Zaida Esther Concepcion, 40, was killed in the accident and Jerry Alfonso Rawls, 43, and another, unidientified person, were seriously injured.
Around noon, police say, Lasonya Denise Thompson was driving a 2006 Nissan Armada SUV southbound on Mallard Creek Road near Sawgrass Ridge Place when she crossed the double yellow line and struck a 2006 Saturn Ion head-on.
Police did not say why Thompson’s vehicle crossed the center line, but they said alcohol was not a contributing factor in the crash.
Thompson, 38, and four children ages 7 to 12 were taken to Carolinas Medical Center with injuries that weren’t life-threatening.
Concepcion, the driver of the Saturn, was taken to Carolinas Medical Center-University, where she was pronounced dead. Rawls and the other passenger in her car were taken to Carolinas Medical Center near uptown Charlotte with what police described as serious injuries.
Later, police charged Thompson with misdemeanor death by vehicle and with driving without liability insurance.
Police encourage anyone with information about the crash to contact the Major Crash Investigation Unit at 704-432-2169 or Crime Stoppers at 704-344-1600. Cleve R. Wootson Jr. and Elisabeth Arriero
