A pair of overnight fires heavily damaged or destroyed two houses in Charlotte.
The fires were reported about 30 minutes apart -- one in northwest Charlotte, the other on the north side of the city.
Shortly before 2:45 a.m., firefighters received a call about a blaze at a house on Cottonwood Park Drive, near Valleydale Road. That is about a mile south of Bellhaven Boulevard.
Crews found heavy flames coming from the single-story ranch when they arrived. The house appeared to be destroyed by the flames.
Then about 3:30 a.m., fire was reported at a house on Panthersville Drive, off Prosperity Church Road. The roof collapsed in that fire, according to neighbors.
In each case, the house was unoccupied. Officials are investigating to determine a cause. There is no indication that the blazes were related, since they were about 14 miles apart and apparently started within 30 minutes of each other.
