RICHBURG Two illegal video poker machines were seized from a Chester County convenience store last week after a customer played the machine, won money and then demanded her earnings from the store’s manager.
Deputies confiscated two “old-timely” kino machines from the Great Falls Mart on Great Falls Highway in Richburg, said Maj. Mary Anne Tolbert with the Chester County Sheriff’s Office.
Last Wednesday, a 58-year-old Fort Lawn woman put $40 in one of the machines and won $880, according to a Chester County Sheriff’s report. The manager gave her $500.
The woman told the manager that she wanted the rest of her winnings, but he said he wouldn’t give her any more money because it was illegal to “pay out” any money, the report states. The woman called police, asking deputies to make the manager pay her the rest of the money.
The manager told deputies he only gave the woman $500 because she got upset and he wanted her to leave the store, the report states. Police informed the woman that they couldn’t make the manager give her the money since gambling is illegal.
Narcotics deputies seized the machines, both worth $3,000, and also confiscated $170 inside the machine, the report states.
“There’s no mistake that they were illegal,” Tolbert said, adding that the machine was taken before a magistrate, who signed a motion ordering the machine’s destruction.
These are the only machines deputies have seized in Chester so far this year, Tolbert said. Criminal charges in the case are still pending.
