Hiker injured in Crowders Mountain fall

by WCNC.com Staff

A hiker at Crowders Mountain State Park suffered serious injuries after falling 15 to 20 feet Sunday afternoon, according to paramedics.

Officials told NBC Charlotte that Luke Parker, 35, was free climbing with a group of people on the Backside Trail area called 'Gumby's Roof.' The Backside Trail is the shortest of the four trails listed as 'strenuous' at the park.

Gaston County Emergency Medical Services received the call about the fallen hiker around 4:45 p.m.

Parker sustained serious injuries to his head and other orthopedic injuries, said GEMS captain Robert Sneed.

At 6:30 p.m. emergency crews brought Parker down the trail and loaded him into an ambulance. He was then flown to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

GEMS, Gaston Life Saving Crew, Gastonia Fire, park rangers and MedCenter Air all responded to the call.
