Charlotte transportation officials say crews are about to start a new phase of the $22.5 million Rea Road Widening Project.
Officials say crews are placing asphalt this week at the intersection of Rea Road and N.C. 51, to prepare for a traffic shift scheduled Monday. That shift will move traffic to the west side of Rea Road, so crews can begin work on the east side of the road.
The project calls for the widening of Rea Road from N.C. 51 to Carmel Estate. It includes new lanes, turn lanes, completion of a storm drainage project, and construction of curbs, retaining walls and sidewalks on both sides of the road.
City officials say the project also is dealing with some sight-distance issues that have caused problems for motorists.
Work is about 20 percent completed, officials say.
