Put slow cooker in garage to control cooking orders

The winner: My home has a very open layout. So when I prepare something in the slow cooker that is aromatic, the smell spreads throughout the house and seems to last forever. I now plug in my slow cooker in the garage. The aromas stay out of the house and the food is certainly just as good. Lisa Buch, Concord

New use for Observer bags. Don’t slip!

Protect your feet from germs and grime as you go through airport security. Simply place the Observer bags over your socked or bare feet to go through the X-ray machine. Discard the bags on the other side when you replace your shoes. Libby Simonini, Cornelius

Keep your garbage disposal smelling fresh

Instead of buying disposer cleaner disks, I make our own “breath mints.” I keep frozen slices (not too big) of orange, lemon or lime skins and feed a few of these “breath mints” to the disposer every few days. It works great.
