FAA to investigate Mount Airy plane crash

The Federal Aviation Administration will be in Mount Airy on Friday trying to learn what caused a single-engine plane to crash at the airport last night.

A witness called 911 around 7:30 p.m. Thursday to say a small plane had gone down at the Mount Airy Municipal Airport. The witness told authorities he heard what sounded like the engine sputtering, said Myron Waddell, assistant emergency services director in Surry County.

The pilot was the only person onboard and he was flown to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for treatment where he was in stable condition on Friday. Waddell said the pilot had complained of back pain before he was airlifted to Winston-Salem.

Haz-mat crews worked to clean up fuel that had spilled from the plane. Meanwhile, the FAA is set to begin investigating the crash on Friday.
