Spring is a labor of love – right, girls?

Tracy Curtis is a mom after a 15-year career in TV and film. She lives in Charlotte.

There is no doubt that Mother Nature put a woman in charge of spring. Just the fact that the season is called “spring” says it all – everybody up, don’t walk – LEAP – because it’s ON.

First thing she does is spring us ahead a whole hour into time. So awesome. We’re gonna eat breakfast in the dark so we can maximize our daylight hours. And because she puts a spring in our step, we become more active and productive than we’ve been all winter.

We get out, we cut grass, we wash cars. We plant flowers, grow vegetables, and run 5Ks. We make slaw and buy hammocks. We paint the houses and meet the neighbors. We pick apples, make pies and improve our short game.

Because she makes outside so magical. It’s like Dorothy landing in Munchkinland. Overnight, the flowers bloom. The grass turns green, the air blows warm, and we get squirrels, Easter bunnies and leprechauns. And an entire day dedicated to hiding colorful eggs full of chocolate gold coins!

And the shopping. She’s totally got that covered. All the clothes are lighter and brighter – you can wear pink, paisley and polka dots. And that’s just the jacket. Anything goes. Purple, orange, yellows and greens. Strappy sandals and sparkly tees. Mix, match and make lemonade. Enjoy the Spring Sale.

And the fact that video is practically dead. Because she has loaded up spring with outdoor sports. Kids play lacrosse, baseball and soccer, and it’s not even virtual. And live music isn’t what you watch on YouTube. It’s outside – in the park. In fact, the only app you need during spring is Google Maps, so you can find the field, zoo and outdoor amphitheater.

And we love Spring Cleaning – dedicated to all the stuff nobody wanted to deal with for nine months. Some things you clean. Some things you burn. Either way, the windows are thrown wide open.

At some point you come down with a spring fever – where you can’t even be inside. You cook outside. You eat outside, you drink outside. Your kids talk you into sleeping outside – but you don’t have to. Because Lady Spring came up with our out. She gave us pollen.

She also gave us the Spring Fling. I think this varies from person to person, but for me it’s usually an outdoor party where I get to wear a floral dress. Spring Break definitely varies from person to person. Spring Break for me now is a well-thought-out trip. Whereas in college, it was definitely a trip, but without any thought whatsoever.

Lady Spring. You go, girl.
