An uncontrolled grass fire ripped through a two-story home in Sharon on Saturday afternoon.

At least 50 firefighters responded, battling the flames and wind gusts of up to 30 miles per hour.

Firefighters say no one was injured in the blaze.

“The wind was a pretty good factor,” said York firefighter Adam Duncan.

York, Sharon, Hickory Grove, Bullocks Creek, McConnells and Smyrna fire departments joined force to keep the flames from spreading.

The fire happened around 1 p.m., destroying a home on Sherer Road.

While at the house fire, Duncan said, the York department got another call about an uncontrolled grass fire.

On Friday, the South Carolina Forestry Commission issued a “Red Flag Fire Weather Alert” effective all weekend.

Officials say high-speed winds, low relative humidity and warm temperatures contribute to an elevated fire danger level. Those factors support the ignition and spread of wildfire, according to the forestry commission.

Under the “red flag” alert, officials advise not burning debris.
