Traffic on southbound Interstate 85 in Cabarrus County remains badly clogged Tuesday afternoon, the result of a morning wreck involving a tractor-trailer.
A truck carrying produce crashed about 9:15 a.m. near N.C. 73, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol. The trailer portion of the vehicle turned partially on its side, and the tractor hit the guardrail.
All northbound lanes were closed for a time, but authorities were able to reopen the left lane shortly after 10:30 a.m. The Concord Fire Departments Hazmat team was called to the scene because of a fuel leak. The driver was hospitalized with minor injuries, authorities say.
At one point, shortly before 10:30 a.m., a northbound motorist reported that traffic was snarled for more than 8 miles, back to Kannapolis.
At last check, the N.C. Department of Transportation said it will be after 4 p.m. before the right lane is open again. Traffic remains backed up at mid-afternoon, and motorists should consider using U.S. 29 as an alternate route.
