BOONE -- One man was killed early Wednesday when fire heavily damaged an apartment building near Boone, officials say.
The victim is believed to be a man who lived on the third floor of the building, in the 500 block of Homespun Hills Drive. That is just west of Boone and about a mile from the Appalachian State University campus.
The fire was reported about 4 a.m. at the building, and Boone firefighters found smoke and flames coming from the four-unit apartment building when they arrived. Crews were able to bring the blaze under control in about 30 minutes, but at least two of the four apartment units were heavily damaged.
Authorities said Wednesday afternoon that the victim was not an Appalachian State student.
Lisa Hensley, a resident of the building,. told WCNC-TV, the Observer’s news partner, that she jumped to safety when the fire broke out. She said the victim was her next-door neighbor.
