Retired astronaut Joan Higginbotham is among the five newest inductees of the Womens History Hall of Fame.
Higginbotham, who lives in Charlotte, is the third African-American woman to be an astronaut. She participated in 53 space shuttle missions.
Other inductees include state House Rep. Martha Alexander; Echo Foundation President Stephanie Ansaldo; Charlotte-Mecklenburg police Maj. LaFreda Lester and community leader Jeanette Price.
The new class of honorees will be recognized at a ceremony Friday at the Levine Museum of the New South in Charlotte.
The Hall of Fame honors women in Mecklenburg County who have made significant contributions to the community.
It is sponsored by the local chapter of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women Clubs, Inc. and the Levine Museum.
