MORGANTON -- A Burke County man was sentenced to at least 25 years in prison this week after being convicted of sexually abusing a child.
Randal Eugene Powell, 29, of Valdese, was convicted in Burke County Superior Court by a jury, which deliberated one hour before returning a verdict. Judge Sharon Barrett sentenced Powell to between 25 years and 30 years 9 months in state prison.
Powell also was must be registered as a sex offender and will be subject to electronic monitoring after release from prison.
He was arrested Dec. 30, 2010, by Burke County sheriff’s deputies. At the time, investigators said they had been contacted in late 2010 by a resident who alleged Powell had sexually assaulted two children under the age of 12. The assaults allegedly happened over a period between January 2007 and December 2010.
