Suspended sheriff appears in court, denies misconduct

A South Carolina sheriff indicted on misconduct charges had his first appearance in court Friday.

During the hearing suspended Chesterfield County Sheriff Sam Parker denied claims that he let favored inmates sleep outside the jail.

Parker posted $150,000 bail and was ordered by a judge to have no contact with the sheriff’s office.

The indictments allege that Parker used inmates to work on his home and personal property. In return, according to the indictments, Parker allowed inmates liberties such as shopping trips, the ability to sleep overnight outside the jail, and trips to eat at restaurants.

In the indictment, it is alleged that inmate Michael Lee was permitted to sleep in the sheriff's armory overnight, unsupervised. The grand jury also accused the sheriff of allowing another inmate, William Skipper, to drive sheriff's office vehicles.
