Brad Elwood’s homer in 9th lifts Charlotte 49ers baseball

RICHMOND, Va. Charlotte sophomore Brad Elwood, the former standout at Piedmont High School in Monroe, had the game-winning hit – a two-run homer in the top of the ninth – as the 49ers won their Atlantic 10 opener 8-5 on Friday afternoon at Pitt Field.

The win was the first for Charlotte (15-6, 1-0) when trailing after eight innings.

ACC

Clemson 7, Duke 0: Sophomore righty Daniel Gossett pitched a five-hit shutout to lead the Tigers (14-7, 4-3) over the Blue Devils in Clemson, S.C. The Blue Devils fell to 11-11 and 2-5.

Southern

Western Carolina 7, Elon 5: The Catamounts rallied to score three runs in the third inning to claim a lead it never relinquished, upending the Phoenix in Cullowhee, N.C.

Western (13-9, 5-2) pitching recorded 14 strikeouts, just two shy of its seasonal high.

Appalachian State 5, College of Charleston 2: Jamie Nunn continued his impressive start to the season with seven innings and earned his fifth win for the Mountaineers in Mount Pleasant, S.C.

Nunn (5-1) struck out six and allowed just four hits for Appalachian State (12-7, 4-3).

Georgia Southern 6, Davidson 4: Georgia Southern scored a run each in the fifth and eighth innings to edge Davidson in Statesboro, Ga.

Andrew Barna gave Davidson (8-12, 4-6) an early lead with a two-run home run.

Big South

Winthrop 3, Presbyterian 1: Matt Pierpont went the distance for the Eagles (7-14, 1-0), striking out six in Rock Hill.

The weekend schedule was revised to avoid showers that are due to come through the area. The teams will now play a doubleheader on Saturday with the first game starting at 2 p.m. and the second starting 30 minutes following the first.

Liberty 5, High Point 4: The Panthers (10-2, 0-4) surrendered three runs in the top of the ninth to Liberty (15-7, 4-0) in the first game of a doubleheader in High Point.

Gardner-Webb 6, Coastal Carolina 3: The Chants’ Ben Smith struck out a career-high 12 – one shy of the school record – but Gardner-Webb (13-8-1, 2-2) scored three in the eighth inning and two in the ninth off Coastal’s bullpen to win in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Elsewhere

N.C. Central 5-3, Florida A&M 4-2: The Eagles (15-9, 7-4 Mid-Eastern Atlantic) beat the Rattlers for the seventh and eighth straight times.

Wingate 6, Anderson 3: Thomas Spitz notched drove in three runs and Ben Currie pitched his first complete game of the season as the Bulldogs (20-12, 12-4 South Atlantic) won.
