More Information

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police say one person was struck and killed by a vehicle late Saturday.

The incident happened around 10:15 p.m. in the 2700 block of Old Steele Creek Road, which is less than a half-mile from an intersection with West Boulevard, police said.

Michael Dwain Williams, 50, was pronounced dead at the scene about 10:22 p.m.

About 10:16 p.m., David Milton Motley, 59, was driving a 2001 Infinity QX4 on Old Steele Creek Road. Elisha Monique Gabriel, 25, was the front seat passenger in the vehicle, police said.

As Motley approached the 2700 block of Old Steele Creek Road, he briefly observed something in the road. Williams was a pedestrian who was lying in the road, in the inbound lane of travel, according to CMPD.

Motley tried to avoid Williams but was unsuccessful. He ran over Williams as he was lying in the roadway, police said.

At the time of the crash, the road was dark but lit by street lights.

Police believe Williams may have had alcohol in his system.

This crash is under investigation by CMPD’s Major Crash Investigation Unit. Any witnesses are asked to call Detective Kevin Allred at (704) 336-8862.
