Motorists lined up early Friday in an effort to grab a $20 gasoline gift card from a Matthews church.
It was the second straight year that New Beginnings Church sponsored the gasoline giveaway on Good Friday. Church officials said they were trying to help people deal with high gasoline prices – and calling attention to the religious significance of Good Friday and Easter Sunday.
The church announced it would begin giving away the gift cards at noon in the church parking lot. Motorists responded by starting a line before sunrise. One of the first motorists in line, a woman who said she drove from Indian Trail for the giveaway, said the $20 card helps her “save my money for other important things.”
Last year, the church gave away gas to people at a Sunoco convenience store on Idlewild Road. That caused major traffic problems throughout the morning. This year, church officials told people to go to the church, on Margaret Wallace Road, between Idlewild and Lebanon roads. Staff reports
