Blooming with Easter joy

On Sunday, Protestants and Catholics in Charlotte and worldwide celebrated Easter – the most important day of the year for Christians. (Easter will be May 5 for Orthodox Christians, who have a different calendar.)

As always, believers marked the joyous occasion of Jesus’ resurrection from the dead with symbols of life – including the flowers blooming in spring, after a cold, dark winter.

Members of Hawthorne Lane United Methodist Church in the Elizabeth neighborhood decorated what had been a bare cross with a blast of flowery colors. Inside the sanctuary, Senior Pastor Andrew Brown preached on being “Alive in Christ.” Children, choir members and others held up Easter lilies, the day’s most traditional symbol. From dead-looking bulbs, they blast into bloom, white like the angels’ dazzling garments on that first Easter Sunday. Tim Funk
