South Meck

Orchestra competition: The South Meck Orchestra earned Excellent and Superior Ratings at the NC Western Region Music Performance Assessment on March 15 in Shelby.

Charlotte Country Day

Physics awards: Seniors Hassan Mason and Sam Wishnek were selected to advance to the semifinalist round of the U.S. Physics Team and were of 406 named semifinalists of 4,435 participants in the qualifying exam.

Stem competition: At the UNCC STEM Education Super Competition, theteam of juniors Grant Steelman, Hunter Ubersox, Nathan Brenner, Walker Poole, Naveen Paul and Johnny Plepler finished in first place for physics. Grant Steelman earned second place in the overall individual physics category.

Myers Park

Choir competition: At the state festival the Chamber Women’s Choir and Mixed Chamber Choir each received Superior Ratings in level 6 music, the highest level.

Olympic High

5k run: The Olympic High School Marching Trojans will host the 2nd Annual Trojan Classic 5k Run/Walk at 8 a.m. April 13 at the school. For details and registration: ohstrojansblog.com or email sturm.kristie@gmail.com.

Charlotte Christian

Musical production: Middle school theater students will present Disney’s “The Little Mermaid Jr.” April 11-13. A special character meet and greet will take place April 13 prior to the matinee performance. Details and reserved tickets at www.charlottechristian.com/boxoffice.

Drama awards: The CCS ACT 2 Competition Drama Team has won seven individual and group awards at the NC Theater Conference Middle School Play Festival for “Romeo and Juliet – Together and Alive At Last!” These honors were awarded: Sarah Beth Edwards, Excellence in Student Technical Directing; Elizabeth Gowan, Excellence in Female Acting; Keaton Gum, Excellence in Male Acting; Abby Marco, Excellence in Student Technical Direction; Mindy Damon, Excellence in Directing; and for the entire cast , Excellence in Production Design and a Superior Play Rating.

Ardrey Kell High

Teacher awards: Zoe Bell was selected as Teacher of the Year, Sigurd Arnesen as 1st Year Teacher of the Year and Lydia Moore as Teacher Assistant Teacher of the Year.

Butler High

Orchestra award: The Butler Symphony Orchestra received the highest award, a Superior Rating at festival. The Orchestra is under the direction of Christina Sienkiewicz.

Providence Day School

Language conference: Charlotte area world language teachers networked at the “World Language Pow-Wow” held at PDS in March. The event was designed to spark collaboration and information sharing between the 40 attendees on professional teaching issues.

Crestdale Middle

Band award: The Crestdale Middle School eighth-grade band has earned a 14th consecutive Superior rating for music rated level four in difficulty at the NC Music Performance Adjudication event held recently at Wingate University. The band program is under the direction of Lesli Clowes.
