Poet performs at state competition

Independence High senior Shakira Warren advanced through the first two rounds of the state’s Poetry Out Loud competition at the Greensboro Public Library on March 16 but did not advance to the finals.

The CMS district champion recited “The Blues Don’t Change,” by Al Young, and “American Smooth,” by Rita Dove, according to her teacher Marie Worsley-Matthews. Shakira called the event “a great learning experience” and was impressed with her competitors’ performances.
