This time five years ago, John and I were locked in a serious disagreement over whether or not Brian should be allowed to go to the beach over spring break with his friends…without us being there too. I had quite a few reservations about it, as I knew exactly what he would be up to along with hundreds (if not thousands) of other ‘loosely’ chaperoned teens. In the end, against my wishes, John consented and off B went. He had the time of his life and thankfully, nothing awful happened…

Fast forward a year later: I was struggling to keep the fractured pieces of our family together any way I could. To say that Grace had been a handful was an understatement, and the pressure from her about going on a spring break trip with friends was much stronger than it had been with Brian, while our reluctance was exponentially greater than with him, for obvious reasons. We finally compromised with her by taking her ourselves for part of the week, as frankly, no other parent wanted the responsibility nor did we want them to have it.

Each year since the ‘big argument’ has been different…eventually Grace started to work and graduated, so the annual spring break issue resolved itself…which was followed by Grandma being terminally ill…then our home was for sale and we were working on a fixer-upper…

All of our old Easter traditions have eroded since we lost Brian; this year, I didn’t bother with baskets and candy, cards or eggs, although I did still make the highly anticipated holiday meal... There comes a point in time when those long standing traditions should be put to rest and only the memories of them remain…we’re there…at least until grandchildren come along…

Wishing you many blessings…tg
