Statesville police are searching for a man who robbed people at gunpoint while pretending to be a police officer.
The robbery occurred at 9:40 p.m. Monday when a man approached three people in the parking of Eastside Billiards and told them he was a narcotics police officer.
The suspect was armed with two handguns and pointed one of them at the victims, police said. He told them to get out of their car and then used plastic zip ties to bind the hands of two of the victims.
He then went through the purse of one victim and stole cash from it, according to police. The suspect fled from the area on foot toward the railroad tracks behind the business at 1607 Salisbury Highway.
Capt. Bryan Johnson said police havent found the suspect yet but were following up on leads Wednesday that he may have known the victims.
It was a pretty poor attempt at impersonating law enforcement officer, Johnson said. He had no fake badge or anything that said police on it.
Police described the man as a white male who was last seen wearing a black jacket, blue jeans, black boots and a bandana around his neck.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Statesville Police Department at 704-878-3406 or Iredell Crime Stoppers at 704-662-1340. Callers can remain anonymous.
