Train hits car in NE Charlotte; driver flees

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are looking for the driver of a car that was struck by a train early Friday morning in northeast Charlotte.

Police say the car was hit at a crossing on Old Concord Road at Newell-Hickory Grove Road, sometime around 4 a.m. Witnesses said they saw several people jump and run from the car before it was struck, police say.

The crossing and nearby roads were closed for several hours during the police investigation but were reopened about 6:30 a.m.
